Here’s a really cool music video by Esteban Diácono created entirely in After Effects with the Trap Code plugins from Red Giant. The song is Ljósið by Ólafur Arnalds. It represents a beautiful execution of a very simple idea. The results are poetic.

You are now watching: Back Pockets on the Floor – Pants on the Ground Predecessor

So, um, yeah. This guy, Gerald Green (of Green Brothers fame) recorded a track back in 1996 called “Back Pockets on the Floor”. This video was, as far as we can tell, a sort of public service announcement urging the younger generation to pull up their pants. “To much killing, purse snatching, car jackin’, crack crackin’ , layin’ back laughin’, thinkin’ you mack’n!”

Unfortunately for the Green Brothers, this video was just too far ahead of its time.  14 years later,  todays youth apparently never got the message. That must be why General Larry Platt felt compelled to give the topic of gravitationally disadvantaged trousers a dusting off with his song, Pants on the Ground.

General Larry Platt first appeared on American Idol where he performed his “original song” to a TV audience this year. But since then, a video clip of that performance has become a viral sensation on YouTube. In addition to the millions of views the original post got, there have been dozens of response videos, many of them with millions of views themselves.

Although he claims he’s not bitter, Gerald Green’s recent video shows that he’s not will to let the general have the whole spotlight. His video has only recently surfaced on YouTube. The description reads:

This is in regards to the General Larry Platt “Pants on The Ground”. His song is a take off of the Green Brothers song ” Back Pockets On The Floor’. Back Pockets On The Floor was written by G. Green and was copyrighted and recorded by the Green Brothers in 1996. The General’s song have the same intent, idea and in part the same message. YOU BE THE JUDGE AMERICA!!

“Back Pockets on the Floor” was copy-written in 1996, so it definitely has precedence, but is “Pants on the Ground” a rip-off?  It is true that the two videos share some common themes such as “hats turned sideways” and of course, pants or the ground (or floor). They are both performed by men over 50… Yeah, you know, Mr. Green has a pretty good case. He’s not planning a law suite or anything. The guy just wants some publicity. So let’s do him a favor an give “Back Pockets on the Floor” the credit it deserves. 5 stars to the O.G. of pants hitching evangelism!
